El santuario sintoísta de Fushimi-Inari, principal santuario de la deidad Inari en Japón, alberga cientos de torii de color rojo. Los Torii son arcos de entrada a santuarios, marcan la divisoria entre lo profano y lo sagrado. Se cree que viene de ‘Tori’ (pájaro) e ‘i’ (lugar), sería ‘lugar de los pájaros’, en la religión sintoísta son mensajeros de los espíritus.
